Good wood or better?
The tree does not show, which career his wood will make.
The final use is not clear until manufacturing. Two different types of full-wood products are possible:
- sawn timber
- refined timber
Refined timber – as KVH® solid structural timber, Duo-/Trio-beams and Glued laminated timber - is mainly used for load-bearing constructions and timber frame buildings. That means all applications which have highest demands on dimensional stability and aesthetic.
Goal of refining is to minimise the risk of checking.
This is done by:
- well-directed choice of incision (free of heart)
- kiln drying to a wood moisture of 12 to 18 %
- grading of wood by strength, growth, knots, resin galls, discolouration, etc.
